Abstract

The textile industry is a major contributor to severe global water pollution, releasing pollutants like dyes, heavy metals, and pesticides. A practical solution for removal is adsorption. This study successfully utilized cocoa pod husk, an agricultural waste, as a low-cost adsorbent. The husk was converted into biochar via pyrolysis and chemically activated with 0.1 M HNO3. A microwave was used for drying the activated biochar. The kinetic tests identified the optimal conditions for adsorption as a 0.01 M NaOH concentration, pH 3, a methyl orange (MO) concentration of 70 mg/L, and a temperature of 25°C. The process was determined to be a pseudo-second order reaction. This approach offers a dual benefit: effectively treating polluted water and valorizing cocoa farming waste.
