Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems play a strategic role in protecting the coastline. However, the Sungsang IV Village area, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, is experiencing mangrove degradation. This community service activity was implemented to increase community understanding and perception of the importance of developing a mangrove arboretum. The program was implemented in February 2025 through site surveys, coordination, outreach, and pre- and post-socialization questionnaire assessments with 27 respondents. Descriptive analysis showed an increase in community understanding across all parameters, particularly involvement in mangrove conservation training, which increased from 18.52% to 85.19%. Improvements were also seen in understanding the benefits of arboretums (55.56%), conservation steps (59.26%), and mangrove species (40.74%). These results demonstrate that direct education and a participatory approach can build positive perceptions.
